Reflexology as a Complement to Modern Medicine On November 13, 2009, I had the opportunity to give a Reflexology presentation to the University of Maryland School of Medicine's 4th year students. My presentation was given in the Old Mansion on Kernan Hospital's grounds. The living room setting made for a relaxed and cozy gathering. We were joined by Dr. Lauren Richter who practices Family Medicine and Acupuncture in the Center for Integrative Medicine in Kernan Hospital. This was my first Reflexology presentation and I was nervous! I hung my charts around the old mantle piece, set my chair up and placed my Reflexology books on the coffee table to be reviewed. I knew these medical students would want practical and concrete information. In my hand-outs I included a copy of the 2330 BC Egyptian wall painting, a page of quotes from different hospitals stating what the reasons and benefits are for offering Reflexology at their facilities and a sheet explaining what a client could expect after a Reflexology session. As I explained the history and basics of Reflexology, I was aware that this was the first time these students were hearing of Reflexology as a complementary practice. I realized I was sowing seeds! ![]() I was pleasantly surprised to find my original nervousness lessen with Dr. Richter's presence. Her interest, as a doctor, to learn more about Reflexology deepened my confidence. We really complemented each other through extended questions, reflections, and shared common approaches. It was my theme in action...Reflexology as a complement to modern medicine! After my lecture Dr. Richter got in my chair to help me demonstrate how Reflexology is performed. The students agreed this was the best part! Since my time was limited, a part of the "hands-on" portion of my presentation was in the form of complimentary Reflexology gift certificates. At the end of the presentation Dr. Richter said she was surprised to learn that Reflexology could be used for so many things. One medical student, who later stopped by for her personal session with me, shared that she had been very skeptical when she arrived. However, because of our findings and my approach, she would come back for another session! My Reflexology presentation was a great success! |
